Message from the Head of School
Welcome to The Fletcher School! I hope that our website provides you with a comprehensive overview and helps you get a sense of the Fletcher experience. In order to truly appreciate The Fletcher School, I suggest that you find time to visit and actually meet our students and staff. They are the ones who make this such a special place!

Every day I see our mission statement come to life. We truly have the opportunity to help students with specific learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders work toward the bright futures that they so deserve. “Where performance meets potential” is not just a tagline printed on paper; it is happening daily in the classrooms and throughout our campus. I take great pride in knowing that our mission and this motto guide us all to make decisions and plans always putting our students as the top priority.

When asked to describe The Fletcher School, I typically use terms such as small classes, low student teacher ratio, structured environment, individualized instruction, and multisensory teaching. Certainly these are all hallmarks of our program, but what I want to capture for those who do not know us is the sense of respect for learning differently, the focus on improving self esteem, and the partnership between our staff and our families. School is particularly challenging for our students, but their families have recognized the opportunity Fletcher can give them to be happy and nurtured as they develop the academic skills that will lead to successful futures.

I invite you to be part of our mission, our school community, and our success!

Margaret Sigmon, M.Ed., Head of The Fletcher School
and Director of The Rankin Institute

Margaret earned a B.A. in Psychology from Salem College in 1974 along with teaching certifications in elementary education and learning disabilities. At Salem she received Orton-Gillingham training under the direction of Dr. Lucia Karnes and Mrs. June Orton. After teaching in public schools as a Resource Teacher for three years, she earned her M.Ed. in Learning Disabilities at Duke University in 1980. During her graduate program, she worked as an intern at Durham Academy helping to create a model program for students with learning disabilities which was the beginning of The Hill Center. Margaret became part of the first teaching staff at Hill, served as Education Coordinator, Assistant Director, and then Director.

In 1995, she was named Head of School for The Fletcher School. In 2004, Margaret was named by the Board to be the first Director of the Rankin Institute as well as continuing her position as Head of School in order to develop the Rankin programs in alliance with the School philosophy.

"I invite you to be part of our mission, our school community, and our success!"
