Laying the Foundation for Lifelong Learning (Grades K-5)

At Fletcher, kindergarten through fifth grade students thrive in a personalized learning environment grounded in the Orton-Gillingham Approach, designed to support learners with language-based learning differences.

This approach is:

  • Individualized - Building on individual strengths to improve weaknesses and challenges
  • Multisensory - Engages multiple senses to give learners more than one way to understand concepts
  • Sequential and Cumulative - Builds confidence through mastery, while remaining flexible
  • Emotionally Sound - Helps our youngest learners feel understood, supported, and empowered

Instruction is carefully tailored to support academic growth as well as the development of Executive Skills—such as task initiation, flexibility, and organization—critical for long-term learning success.

Specialized Early Learning (Grades K-2)

Early intervention is key to helping students with dyslexia and other learning differences thrive. In grades K–2, Fletcher provides targeted support to strengthen early literacy skills while fostering a love of learning.

Children who may benefit from Fletcher’s early intervention often show signs such as:

  • Family history of reading struggles
  • Language development delays
  • Difficulty retrieving words quickly and accurately
  • Difficulty identifying certain rhymes
  • Struggling to follow multistep (2-3 step) direction

K–2 students also participate in two enriching electives:

  • Language Development - Taught by Fletcher’s full-time Speech-Language Pathologist, for students in grades K-2
  • Movement - Led by an Occupational Therapist, for students in grades K-1

From kindergarten through fifth grade, Fletcher students build a strong academic foundation, develop essential learning strategies, and gain the confidence to thrive as they move into Middle School and beyond.
