Middle School

Building Independence & Confidence (Grades 6-8)
In the Middle School, students build on their academic foundation through a multisensory instructional approach that engages visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning pathways. Core principles of the Orton-Gillingham Approach are integrated into classroom instruction to support diverse learning needs.
By providing separate classes for reading and writing, we minimize cognitive overload and create space for targeted, skill-specific growth. Our writing program, grounded in The Writing Revolution/Hochman Method, gives students systematic instruction to become confident and competent communicators. Just as Orton-Gillingham breaks reading into manageable steps, The Writing Revolution does the same for writing, starting with simple sentences and building toward strong, well-structured paragraphs and essays.
Teachers provide individualized instruction and assessments aligned with each student’s learning profile, fostering independence and critical thinking. Developing self-advocacy skills is a key focus, as students begin identifying the tools, accommodations, and strategies that help them succeed.
We place a strong emphasis on explicitly teaching Executive Skills—such as organization, time management, and emotional control—to lay the groundwork for students’ long-term academic and personal growth. Students benefit from a dedicated Executive Skills block at the end of most school days (four days out of a seven-day rotation), providing time to get organized, plan ahead, and connect with teachers before leaving campus.
